Just say no to the Easter Bunny!

It's that time of the year when I get on my blog and say "Please, for the love of God, do NOT buy a rabbit this Easter!!!!"

The photo above is of my sweet Emma bunny. She was found almost one year ago, abandoned on the side the road, most likely an Easter rabbit that someone decided they didn't want. The first time I laid eyes on her she was huddled up against a curb, scared to death. It still breaks my heart to think about it.

Since then she has taken over the entire upstairs of my house. Every morning I awake to her running around my bed, begging for her morning treat. Then we have our daily ritual of chasing, snuggling and chasing some more. She is perfection.

Unless you are able to have a rabbit inside your home, free of a cage and safe from other animals (and children), DO NOT GET ONE. Please go to the House Rabbit Society's website to learn more about why purchasing a rabbit at Easter time is to be discouraged. And please spread the word.

Good advice! And I LOVE Emma bunny :o) I might just have to visit your house someday so I can cuddle with your bunnies - I don't think my dogs and cats would like it if I brought a bunny home (teehee)...

Rabbits are cute, but they are a plague pest species here, so instead of Easter Bunnies, we have Easter Bilbies!

Thanks for posting Nancy! After getting little Wren and seeing how much personality and room she needs, it's easy to see how many of the "Easter Bunnies" get stuck in a cage and ignored for the rest of their lives. Even abandoned! So sad!!!

Amen Sister! I totally agree.... It's cruelty to have an animal like that and not allow them to live life freely with liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.......hmmm.... sounds familiar........ :) They deserve to be loved and spoiled..... just like everyone else....

Do people actually buy (real) bunnies for Easter?

That’s just sad! We don’t have an Easter Bunny tradition in my country, so I don’t understand this, but why would anyone do something like that?

Emma is adorable!! We have been contemplating having a bunny for a couple of months. Not for Easter, just for our first pet. I will take this to heart and see the link you posted. More information is always good :) Thanks!!

Hey Nancy, thanks for posting this. We have our two bunnies since 1,5 years right now, and while I could not imagine to have them run around the house before, I can't believe having them in the cage right now. They just hate it, and we don't put or dogs and cats in cages either when they are at home (at least not the nice of us).

Such a cutie!

We had people down the alley that raised show bunnies and chickens. Some of the bunnies excaped and have had babies that live under the storage building next door. The bunnies (wild) love to terrorize my 100 pound dog! (thanks goodness we have a good fence for the dogs)

Since I have cats we can't have bunnies. But I do like to look at other peoples rabbits.

Actually....that story, an animal lover myself, made me think that this little bunny was meant to run into you. I cannot believe she wasn't scared and didn't run. What a happy ending for an adorable pet!! I have a dog that was a rescue (Buddy) and since having him, I will only get rescues in my future :O)
