Water is not my friend

As many of you know there has been extensive flooding in much of the north east. This photo is of my town, Owego, NY. My house can be seen on the left hand side of this photo, across the street from the river. It's the second to the last house with the black roof. I was alone on Thursday, the 8th of September, as the water surrounded my house creating an island. My basement filled, stopping within a foot of my first floor. Part of my porch has been washed away. There will be no power for who knows how long. In other words, things kind of suck at the moment.

I managed to get out of town on Friday and will return today to see just what I am dealing with. I am one of the "lucky" ones, however, and I realize this with great amounts of survivor's guilt. So many of my neighbors have lost much more. I have lost my kiln and the studio where I work in Binghamton has also been destroyed so at this particular place in time I am out of business. This is a fairly terrifying reality.

To those who have made purchases with me, I will be shipping your orders just as soon as I can.

Thanks so much to everyone who has expressed concern and offered to help. I can't tell you how much I appreciate all of it. Your kindness has kept me going over the past few days. Once I get an idea of what I need and what needs to be done I will let everyone know.

I'm so very sorry for all your trouble. We saw all the tv coverage here in Ireland and my hubby's business trip to NYC was cancelled but you don't really get the level of devastation to peoples homes and lives until you read something like this. I hope you get up and running again as soon as possible. Good luck and best wishes. Ariane

Hi Nancy. I'm glad you were able to get away and that you are safe. I thought about you when I heard about this on the news...I used to live in Watertown, now in the deep south dodging hurricanes! I was in a similar situation when Katrina hit here. If I can help, let me know.

So sorry, Nancy. I can't imagine what you all are going through (scenes like these just tug at my heart) but my prayers are with you and the rest of the people that are in the flooded area. Praying that you can salvage what you can and get the help that is needed. Times like these bring people together...hang in there. Sending ((hugs)).

Andrew Thornton recently accepted donations to help him get his new shop up and running. I appreciated having an opportunity to participate in a "grant" to help an artistic endeavor. I hope you will consider setting up a fund so that those who care about you can participate in that, too.

He did receive some criticism from those who thought he shouldn't have been asking for money. IMHO, however, I don't often get an opportunity to do something that actually helps an artist move forward in his/her creative career, and I enjoy doing that. If nothing else, I would like to be able to purchase a gift certificate for myself from your shop, redeemable after some reasonable future date. You'd receive the money now, but not have to produce the work until you've been able to get yourself up an running again. There could be several ways to set it up so that all of the certificates wouldn't be redeemed at once. Please consider allowing us to help!
Oh, God! I'm so sorry but I'm also glad that you are OK. It'll take some time to "rebuild" the business but be sure it's going to happen. You and your community will be on my prayers. "When the going gets tough, the tough get going!"

I am so sorry Nancy...Glad you are safe. My thoughts and prayers are heading your way. We just had a pretty big scare here in Oak Hills, California with that fire but we were one of the lucky ones the winds changed.

Please keep us posted on your needs. Would love to help.

Nancy, I am so sorry to hear what's happened. I hope the insurance companies are quick with their responses. The gift certificate idea sounds great, especially if it will help you to get back on your feet.

holy hell. i don't know what i can offer you other than *hugs* and buoyant thoughts to get your home and business sorted out one way or another! best of luck!
I am so sorry. Our town was hit pretty hard and I feel helpless to do much. I wish there was something I could do to help you. I agree with the person who said to do a fundraiser of something. I thought about starting one but there is no way I can with everything that's going on here. *roof leak, basement flooding*
I would love to donate something to help you get a new kiln or help the studio get back up and running. I don't have much but you let me know if there is anything I can do.

Oh Nancy, I just read about your loss on Lorelei's blog. Sooo sorry to hear!!!
If there is ANYTHING I can do, please let me know!
Is there a way to donate?

I know that thinking "good thoughts" and sending "love" don't really cut it in a situation like this, even though I send them! If there is anything concrete I can do just let me know. I will for sure spread the word about your donation page! Hang tough!
