Sunday ramblings and new shop stuff

I've said goodbye to my neck until sometime next spring. I hope it has a nice winter completely encased in fleece and turtlenecks. It's actually not too terribly cold outside right now, but I am freezing anyway. My constant feed of hot mint tea isn't doing much more than making me have to pee every 20 minutes or so. TMI, I know. Sorry. Anyhoo, it's a quiet Sunday and I just finished the new Dan Brown book, The Lost Symbol. I enjoyed it completely. I am real sucker for secret society/Ancient Mysteries/evil tattooed people/nerdy academics-turned-action-hero type stuff. And this book had it all! My usual reading list tends to be a bit on the non-fiction/information-headache-that-only-appeals-to a-handful-of-strange-people me-being-one-of-them and-perhaps-I-should-try-to-enjoy-myself-a-bit more instead-of-always-thinking-that-I-need-to-learn-something side. I promised myself after reading Ian Kershaw's two volume biography on Hitler that I would lighten up a bit. (Who am I kidding, I'm STILL reading those l-e-n-g-t-h-y books...) So, with that in mind can anyone recommend a nice light and airy good read? Maybe we should all read a book together - like a book club type of thing. That would be kind of fun. :)

In other news - jewelry news - I received my pieces back from Belle Armoire Jewelry magazine. These are the pieces that are featured in the current issue (found in all major book and craft stores...plug, plug, plug). I'll be listing the necklace and the bracelet in the shop today. Feel free to pay them a visit and give them a pat on the head. :)

I've been making more bracelets this past week and here are two of them. First up is an Acanthus bracelet. I really enjoy making these one-of-a-kind pieces. I tend to come up with my most creative ideas when I'm sitting there staring at a piece wondering what in the world I can do to make it interesting.

The little touches I find interesting (and even inspiring for future pieces) are things like this detail above. I took three pieces of hammered chain and joined them with a wire and rhodonite beads. It's nothing ground-breaking, no reinvention of the wheel... but I like it just so darn much I can hardly stand it!

Here is a new owl bracelet. Anything owl has been a good seller at shows this year so I am trying to stock up for the holidays.

My favorite part of this piece is the brass chain cluster with glass beads. This is my favorite chain at the moment so expect to see it all over the place. Isn't it funny how a chain can make you happy? (I'm a cheap date)

I'm off to plop these pretties in the shop. Enjoy the rest of this Sunday! :)

I've been meaning to read more books lately. I think it might make me feel smarter, or something.
But it's gotta be lighter reading, like maybe something with some humor.
I'm totally up for a book club. As long as we don't have to have to have a book read in a short period of time, like a week.

p.s. you're new bracelets rock. I can't believe I missed out on the owls when I had the chance. dammit.

Silly girl, you know you can always get an owl from me. Just tell me what color.

Yes, let's read! I am a pretty slow reader these days so it would be like a three week period, or so. Something light and funny would be good. But what?? Hopefully someone will recommend something good.

I wish I had some suggestions but the only books I've been keeping up lately are beading books.
I too, hope someone has some good recommendations! And a 3 week period sounds perfect!

i just finished reading the Lost Symbol as well. It was a great read, i thought, and i had trouble getting to much else until i had it finished! your bracelets are stunning Nancy! There may be a lot of us who dabble in this and that and make pendants and earrings and things out of our shared medium.... but you my friend, you do what noone else can do. Your work is, per usual, stunning, unique and a feast for the senses; color, texture, the use of different elements, shapes etc... really really fantastic. okay, now back to my little pendants and earrings....

confession - i tend to be a learner too... so i have long books, like 'hunger's brides' about a 17th c. mexican nun who was a writer - a mere 1300 pages! tough one to lay on your stomach at night... love the dan brown books for the art history... hadn't read the new one... light? reread 'through the looking glass' to get ready for burton's interp of alice! 'eat, pray, love' is laugh out loud in the beginning... 'wicked'?
a book club would be awesome! right now i read what my daughter reads in her honors english classes - and they are often really good...
your work is always so beautiful.. and the innovations are so terrific!

Absolutely fabulous jewelry! The bracelets are to die for. You are amazing!!
Love the bracelets. Do you like fantasy? Garth Nix wrote a series of books called The Abhorsen Trilogy. It's juvenile fiction, but I love it. Also, I'm reading Rules of Deception by Christopher Reich. It's a spy/suspense thriller with short chapters that reads like a movie. I can't put it down and I'm at the end so it's all starting to come together. Just some suggestions. I LOVE to read, don't have a lot of time for it, but like it anyway. Book Club sounds awesome. We could read a book and then challenge ourselves to make jewelry inspired by the book...hhhmm....(you know you're a jewelry designer when...)

I love to read and do it all the time. I had been reading history books so I thought I would change it up. Currently I'm reading "The Likeness" by Tana French.
From the Book: "Six months after a particulary nasty case. Detective Cassie Maddox has transferred out of Dublin's Murder squad and has no plans to go back. That is, until an urgent telephone call summons her to a grisly crime scene.
It's only when she sees the body that Cassie understands the hurry. The victim, a young woman, is Cassie's double and carries ID identifying herself as Alexandra Madison, an alias Cassie once used on an undercover job. Suddenly, Cassie must discover not only who killed this girl but, more importantly, who is this girl? And as reality and fantasy become desperately tangled. Cassie moves dangerously close to losing herself forever." So far I'm enjoying it.
Your pieces are beautiful. I have the copy of the magazine, congrats on your feature.

Congrats On the magazine!!! I'm reading Born to Run, by Christopher McDougall. A fun tale and you learn something but too serious or heavy. I like learning something when I read not much into novels.
Thanks for the blog link! Love your blog and work too!

The braclets are great-I love the one with the hammered chain and rhodonite beads - very bohemian. A good fun book is The Fabulous Traveling Funeral of Annie Freeman by Kris Radish.
